The Underground Railroad was a secret communication system that would lead slaves from the Pre-Civil War South harshness to freedom in the North. Despite tough fugitive slave laws, social attitudes, and slave culture, many people demonstrated strength and courage to give others a chance for life, liberty and pursuit of happiness even if it meant losing theirs. ​​​​​​​
